Delighting in the Trinity: An Introduction to the Christian Faith
Author: Michael Reeves
Suggested Reading Level: Average / High School
Delighting in the Trinity: An Introduction to the Christian Faith informed my understanding of the Trinity and impacted me in a profound and personal way. The book did this by showing me that God is primarily, foundationally, and eternally Father; that the Son is eternally begotten of the Father in love; and that the Holy Spirit, third Person of the Trinity, is the Personal bond of fellowship among all three divine Persons. By understanding this, my faith in our Triune God was strengthened and my delight in His love was deepened.
The author, Michael Reeves, first lays the foundation for the Trinitarian nature of God by explaining that God is first to be understood as the eternally loving Father. He does this by emphasizing that the perfect revelation of the divine essence of God is the eternally begotten Son, which by necessary inference reveals the eternal patrimony of the Father. Thus, God in His most essential identity is Father – life-giving, overflowing with love, from all eternity begetting His Son, emanating the Spirit of Love, and in creation and re-creation extending His fatherly love to us.
That the Son is eternally begotten of the Father in love is not an inconsequential reality. The Son is the radiance, the image, the shine, the glory, the going out of the Father’s being. As there was never a time that the Father did not exist, so also there was never a time that the Son did not exist. For the Son is the manifestation of the Father and not just an embodiment of His essence, but the fullness of His being – the One Who from all eternity has delighted in the life-giving love of His Father. In all of this, the divine Holy Spirit of God binds them together in love, ever stirring up their delight in one another and drawing us into this holy union that we might do the same.
John wrote that the Apostles proclaimed, “…the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us… …so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:2-3 ESV). Through this book, I have begun to understand what it means that the Triune God has called me into this eternal, divine fellowship of the reciprocating love of the Father, Son, and Spirit. And, in understanding this, my ability to rest in His presence and receive His love has grown as well.
